--The Scottish Parliament can only be in session when the ceremonial mace is in the room. Originally the mace was not ceremonial. It was used to beat people who got out of hand. (I need one in my classroom--the nonceremonial kind.)
--The Stone of Destiny was a special stone where the old Scottish kings were anointed. Then the English stole it. They have since returned it.
--One of the symbols of Scotland is a unicorn with a chain around its hoof. No one knows why the chain was originally put there, but strong Scottish nationalists say that it represents being chained to England.
