Lochinver and the Midges
While we were in the Lake District of England, we told some people that we were headed up to the Scottish highlands. They warned us to watch out for the midges. Midges are like a cross between noseeums and mosquitos. While we were in the highlands, they pretty much attacked me. If we stopped for too long, then we would be swarmed by hundreds of midges (I'm not exaggerating). After enduring their torment for a short time, we would race for the car. Of course, the process of getting in the car allowed several dozen midges to get in with us so we would have to roll down the windows and drive fast to get them out. After a few days in the highlands, my face and hands were covered with midge bites--red itchy bumps. That was really special. But the highlands were beautiful! Here's a picture of Lochinver, a teeny tiny town in the northwest highlands right on the coast. Our bed and breakfast is one of the little white houses on the ridge overlooking the bay. The breakfast room overlooked the water and was really beautiful!
