Before the Mozart's Requiem concert, we ate some dinner at the Cafe in the Crypt in the basement of St. Martins-in-the-Fields church. You don't get to eat in a crypt every day. We had some lovely vegetable curry. And since we were eating dinner in a crypt and recoutning our day, we starting telling some morbid stories.
This is our favorite story from the Tower of London. They used to execute people at the Tower of London, but being a record-keeping people, the Brits would paint a portrait of the people being executed before the deed was done. But once, the executioner was slightly drunk and he executed a man before his portrait was painted. In his drunken stupor, he also botched the execution and it took more than one try to chop the man's head off. So the next day when the mistake was discovered, they sewed the man's head back on. Then they put a nice ruffle around his neck and painted his portrait. Then they detached head and body once more and buried the remains. This seemed to be an appropriate story to tell while eating dinner in a crypt.
