My Favorite Pig Story in Bath

We heard a great story when we went on a walking tour of the city of Bath. According to legend, there was once a prince named Bladud who contracted some kind of skin disease and was banished from his home to live in Bath. While he lived in Bath, he was a swineherd. Unfortunately for the pigs, they contracted the prince’s skin disease. Rough for them. Bladud tried to take good care of the pigs. Sometimes he would use acorns to lure them out of their mud baths and up to the farm. Then Bladud realized something. He noticed that those pigs who had the skin disease that wallowed in the mud were cured of the disease. So he thought that if it worked for pigs, it might work for him too. So Bladud wallowed in the mud as well and he was cured! He was able to return to his family. When his father died, he was pronounced king and moved his entire court to Bath. Here is a picture of Bladud’s pigs from a garden near the Bath Abbey.
